Born in Dijon, Claudot studied at the lycée of Fine Arts in his hometown before joining the ranks at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1909. A devout Communist, he traveled to China in 1926, where he became a professor at the National Institute of the Arts in Beijing at the start of the Revolution, and shortly afterwards at the Chinese Academy of Arts (Hangzhou), where he taught the painter Li Keran. His life and teaching career in China is deeply marked in his work through nationalistic scenes of oriental life carried out by areas of bright colors demarcated with sober and clear lines.
